2021 Summer Sport Round 1 – Chevalier College
8th February 2021

2021 Summer Sport Round 1

Conditions were slightly damp and gloomy for those outdoors on Saturday. Despite the elements, all fixtures (even cricket!) were completed, albeit with players and coaches of some teams getting a ‘bit soggy’.

At school, Chev hosted basketball, touch football, and junior cricket. The Girls Basketballers started the day with games against Barker and Redlands. The 1sts Girls came up against a tall and skillful, Barker team who were just too strong. Georgie M. was Chev’s best.

Chev's Junior A Basketballers who were playing at Narrabeen were taking no chances in the Greater Sydney hot zone!!

Deb Rossiter’s Junior B girls went really well against Redlands and, with a few talented Year 7 recruits, they got their new season off to a great start.

For the Boys Basketballers, it was great to be back playing but a tough start against quality (tall) opposition. The basketballers at Chev wore black armbands to acknowledge and respect the recent passing of Rick Davies.

The boys at St Andrews must have been playing a lot of basketball during the break. For the 1sts Boys Cameron D. and Will B. were our best.

The Girls Softballers were away in Penrith with the Juniors having a great win. The 1sts weren’t so lucky but happy to have the season underway.

Merryn C., Charlotte G., Michaela P. and Sarah R. were all good and will hope to take their form to the ISA trials on Monday 8 February.

The Touch Footy Girls, in the rain, thought that conditions were almost perfect. Soft underfoot, not too hot and great fun to slide on the grass! There were 11 games played and the ledger showed Chev 6 v opponents 5 at the end of the day.

Special mention of the new coaching combination of Geoff Hawke and Gemma Farrugia who end up winners after two matches with a 15-3 aggregate!

It’s always good to get positive feedback from officials. An ex-school principal and experienced Touch Referee emailed after his games on Saturday:

“I enjoyed today despite the rain and my questionable fitness. High praise for the girls. Every one of the 1sts and 2nds shook my hand, and said thank you with a smile on her face. As an ex-principal that is most impressive. Looking forward to the next matches.”

As mentioned the cricketers deserve praise for even getting their matches completed. The juniors may have thought otherwise after a batting disintegration. For the Chev 1sts who travelled to play St Spyridon on the beach – great bowling and batting saw them start the year with a win. Sam M. and Nick C. with the ball and Hugh H. and Nick C. with the bat were the stars.

Great to be back in action with sport once again.
