A flawless day emerged for the first round of the 2024/25 ISA Cricket season and the Main Oval at Chevalier College looked postcard worthy as the last of the winter frost was removed from the covers at 8:00am. After a quick warm up and a close inspection of the pitch, Mr Miller came down to present the debutants their first caps and to wish the side the best for the season ahead. In his first role as captain, Josh M lost the toss and the St Pat’s captain chose to bat first on the rock hard wicket.
Good early spells from both Louie K (1/43 from 8 overs) and Charlie T (0/42 in 9 overs) put the pressure on the Pat’s batsmen, but the edges didn’t come. Nonetheless, Louie K pulled off an early run out with a direct hit following some good fielding in the infield and a mix up from the Pat’s openers. Following this early success, wickets were hard to come by and the step up in competition from 2nd Division last year to 1st Division this year became very apparent. The boys toiled away nicely, Jack G (1/49) took his first wicket in first grade and Oliver L (2/38 in 10 overs) bowled an excellent spell of accurate and challenging off spin. Ed K (2/50) also bowled a good spell before being taken to in the latter overs of the innings. The fielding was solid for the first game but the quality of the Pat’s batsman came to the fore and they amassed an imposing 7/278 from their 50 overs.
In reply, the Chevalier chase never really got going. The first 6 wickets fell with only 17 runs scored and whilst there was some poor shot selection, the bowling was very accurate and quick. Some fight from the lower order, particularly Louie K (16 from 35 balls) and Oliver L (9 from 55 balls) was heartening to watch. The side didn’t just throw the towel despite the quality of the opposition attack. The boys saved a double bonus point defeat by batting for 33 overs. It’s fair to say, the match was largely one sided and boys were outclassed by their opposition but there is still plenty of good cricket lessons to be gained and the aim is to improve in every match played.
