Another difficult day at the office for the Chevalier College First XI in Round 2 of the 2024/25 season. The conditions could not have been much more different from the week before with chilly winds and a top temperature of around 13 degrees. Nonetheless, that is a part of the joy of playing cricket in the HIghlands and the side were eager to embrace the challenge presented by another top tier cricketing school. Captain Josh M won the toss and wanted to post a score following the difficulties chasing last week. Unfortunately, things didn’t go to plan from there and we would be lying if we said we played our best cricket.

Rohan D (6) nicked off early and Josh M (3) got a really good ball from the Pius opening bowler. In early at 3, MacKenzie P (40 from 44 balls) was easily the standout batsman on the weekend. He played with patience early on before punishing some poor second change bowling, capitalising on a free hit opportunity with a massive 6 which cleared the picket fence on the Main Oval (no mean feat given the College ground dimensions are the same as the SCG). With the score 3/56, there was a sense of optimism in the group but sadly when Mackenzie was given out LBW, the next 6 wickets fell for only 4 runs and the team were all out for 60 in the 24th over.

With the ball, the bowlers toiled away but 60 is not really a defendable total, so to take 3 Pius wickets before the total was passed was a commendable effort. Louie K took a good catch at fine leg off a Charlie T (1/13) short ball, before Ed K (1/6) and Oliver L (1/8) chimed in late with a wicket each. However, the Pius batsman still ran down the meagre total in the 18th oval. Outplayed in both matches so far, but plenty of room for improvement in our performances – no doubt. Back to the training paddock Tuesday, Thursday ahead of Oakhill in the first away game next week.

Chevalier 10/60 from 23.4 overs
MacKenzie P (40)

St Pius X 3/61 from 17.4 overs
Ed K (1/6)
Oliver L (1/8)
